We left the house around 4:00 am on Saturday morning hoping to make it onto the banks with little traffic issues. Well that didn't work out as we hit traffic several times on the way down to North Carolina and then hit heavy heavy traffic leading up to the bridge that takes you onto the islands. We moved at a snails pace for about 3 hours before finally making it through the red light that holds everything up. We didn't make it to the house until around 7 pm! Long day of driving! The kids all did absolutely amazing during the long drive. The boys were helpful at entertaining the girls and the girls were excellent considering how long they were strapped in car seats...no major meltdowns that couldn't be handled.
When we got there we unpacked the car and ordered some pizza for dinner. The boys of course were right in the pool! It was a pretty early night for everyone the first night. The next morning the fun began! We headed to the beach after breakfast and enjoyed a full day in the sun. Brooklyn absolutely loved the sand and ocean. She would run into the waves and then run out of the screaming. We dug holes for her and she used a boogie board as a slide. She would try to stand on the boogie board and walk down it into the hole but fell almost every time and thought it was hysterical. She loved to dig, throw, and eat the sand. The kid was so covered in sand every day that it was nearly impossible to wash it off her. Bristol loved the beach also. She hung out in a baby pool most of the time since she couldn't do much in the sand but eat it or rub it in her little eyes. She was content chewing on toys covered in salty ocean water.
One of the days we were at the beach a man walked up to Scott and asked him if he would hold his belongings while he took a dip in the ocean. Scott agreed and the man pulled out a bag of "wheat" (as we told the kids). None of us were really sure what to think or do about this. So the man buried his wheat in the sand and took off into the ocean for a few minutes. Shortly after he came back to retrieve his "wheat". He stood talking to us for awhile and we found out his name was Daryl and he was a local of the Outer Banks. He was pretty entertaining but had clearly smoked to much wheat in his time.
The rest of the week was spent outside whenever the sun was out...it was cloudy quite a bit, but always warm. We spent mornings at the beach and afternoons by the pool. We spent evenings shopping, playing mini-golf, going to the arcade, getting ice cream, or playing corn hole. Late evenings were spent playing cards with the adults while all the kids either slept or watched a movie/played on their computers. It was a relaxing vacation and I'm sad its over....Until next year!
